Artistic Concepts as Embodied Knowledge

Natural learning behaviours are the basic, innate modes of an individual organism for exploring and probing its relationship with the environment, where the interaction with the environment leads to the consolidation of the particular experience in any kind of physical, biological structure that serves as long-term memory. In humans, these behaviours serve the cognitive development of the individual, which in turn improves the individual’s ability to maintain itself, increase its chances of survival, and produce offspring. I have identified 4 natural learning behaviours that are relevant for a human being’s development: play, creativity, social learning, and associative and reinforcement learning. My research proposes that the design of education and its technologies and materials can best aid the learner’s discovery of his natural abilities and talents, if the conception of the learner is one that views the learner as interacting with the educational environment from the basis of these natural learning behaviours.
